Use Case

Holistic Iron Ore Supply Chain

Situação e Solução

Challenge in connecting IT to OT and exchanging data throughout the supply chain and ensure efficient process and safe operation

BHP Billiton opened an Integrated Remote Operations Centre (IROC) in Perth. The IROC provides with a real-time view of its entire Western Australia (WA) iron ore supply chain and allows it to remotely control its Pilbara mine, fixed plant, and train and port operations from one central location.

IROC uses a mine fleet-management system, train-control and fixed plant-control systems for mine and port operations, while CCTV and radio systems are used to communicate with on-site personnel.

Resultados

  • Economic value addition: By helping optimize operations, ROCs can deliver approx. $65 billion in industry value to mining by 2025.
  • Employment: ROCs can also improve safety by reducing the number of personnel who need to be present on site in potentially hazardous environments.
  • The estimation is it could save approximately 250 lives and avoid more than 12,000 injuries between 2016 and 2025.

Newcrest Mining–  Using smart wear to monitor fatigue levels

Apresentação da Empresa

Company facts

  • Gold mining, exploration and production company
  • Year founded: 1966
  • HQ: Melbourne, Australia
  • Revenues: $3.6 B
  • Employees: 5,443

Use Case

Digital tools to build awareness and trust

Situação e Solução

To deal with health & safety issues related to fatigue and overexertion, Newcrest Mining provides field workers with smart baseball caps, known as SmartCaps, that monitor their brainwaves and measure fatigue.

The technology has been rolled out primarily with truck drivers and machinery operators, who are at risk from fatigue-related injuries.

The SmartCap uses an electroencephalogram (EEG) and proprietary algorithms to calculate a risk assessment number, which corresponds to a worker’s ability to resist falling asleep. The smart wear provides an early warning when a driver is approaching microsleep.

The hats are also used by Anglo American and Rio Tinto.

Resultados

  • After rolling out the smart wear across mining truck drivers and machinery workers, supervisors were able to monitor workers online from any location and get real time information on their alertness levels.
  • This not only led to a decrease of incidents and accidents on mining sites, but also helped Newcrest with redesigning shift structures and, as a result, optimizing productivity.
